Clifton was born in Multnomah County, Oregon and attended the University of Oregon in Eugene, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in journalism. She began her journalism career in 1991 as a newspaper copy editor for The (Eugene) Register Guard. She was a page designer and assistant presentation editor for The (Bremerton, Washington) Sun for four years before moving to the Seattle Times in 1996. She began her job at the Times as a local section designer and is now a lead news designer/editor who develops and produces the Sunday front page and special news projects. Her work has won more than a dozen awards from the Society for News Design, including an Award of Excellence for her front-page remembrance of the Sept. 11 attacks.
