Geri Migielicz

Migielicz was born in St. Louis, Missouri and attended the University of Missouri-Columbia, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in journalism and attended graduate school at Ohio University. She got her start in journalism in 1979 as a staff photographer at the Emporia (KS) Gazette, moving up to chief photographer at the St. Joseph News Press and Gazette. She was picture editor and photographer at the Seattle Times, then became the first picture editor at the Rocky Mountain News in Denver. She joined the San Jose Mercury News in 1986 as picture editor, and she has been director of photography there since 1993. She has led her photography staff to win numerous awards; in 2004, the paper’s coverage of California’s governor recall election was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in feature photography. She is a founding board member of Associated Press Photo Managers, which promotes leadership development and training for picture editors.
