Powell was born in Oak Park, Illinois and attended the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in political science, and the London School of Economics, where she earned a master’s degree in international relations. She began her journalism career in 1992 with Cable News Network in Atlanta. After several years working on daily news, she moved to long-form television in the network’s investigative unit. Since becoming a freelancer in 2001, she has worked on documentaries for PBS Frontline and produced military affairs at ABC News. Her most recent project, “Ghosts of Rwanda,” a two-hour documentary aired in April 2004 on the 10th anniversary of the Rwandan genocide, in which 800,000 people were killed.
