Rauch was born in Kansas City, Missouri and earned a bachelor’s degree in journalism at the University of Kansas and attended the University of Paris-Sorbonne for international studies. She got her start in journalism in 1988 as a staff photographer at the Boulder (Colorado) Daily Camera newspaper. She later worked as a staff photographer at the Wichita (Kansas) Eagle and since 1999 she has worked as a photographer for the Associated Press. In her current position as the Western Regional Photographer for the AP, based in Las Vegas, she has covered everything from natural disasters and John Kerry’s campaign for president to the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. Her work covering those two wars, especially the women affected in Afghanistan, has been recognized by awards from the Associated Press Managing Editors in 2002 and 2003.
