staff reporter, Dong-A Ilbo, Seoul, Korea (Shinyoung Journalism Fund Fellow)
Shin was born in Seoul, Korea and earned a bachelor’s degree in English and a master’s degree in interpretation and translation, both from Hankook University of Foreign Studies. Since 1995, he has worked at the Dong-A Ilbo Newspaper, first as a staff reporter covering crime news and investigative stories. Working on a newspaper with a daily circulation of 2 million, some of his stories have created rapid change; his discovery that a Seoul department store had installed hidden cameras in the ceilings of women’s rest rooms to prevent theft resulted in a government investigation and a consumer boycott that drove the department store into bankruptcy. With the economic crisis of 1997, he changed news desks and became a business and economic reporter. Since then he has concentrated on economics news ranging from monetary policies to international trade. His work has earned a number of awards, including Journalist of the Year in 2004 from the Samsung Journalism Foundation.
