Dorji was born in Punakha, Bhutan and earned a bachelor’s degree in communications at Mitchell College of Advanced Education in Bathurst, Australia and a master’s degree in journalism from Columbia University in New York. After working and a writer and editor for the Royal Government of Bhutan’s Department of Information 1979 to 1986, Dorji started Bhutan’s first and only national newspaper as editor-in chief and managing director of the Kuensel Corporation. In addition to his newspaper work, he has many roles in the community, including director of the Bhutan Trust Fund Board, director of the Youth Development Fund Board, a member of the UNESCO National Commission, and a member of the Council of Royal University of Bhutan. Bhutan, which has been ruled by a monarchy for 100 years, is set to hold its first general elections in 2008; Dorji plans to spend his fellowship year preparing for a new role for the press in a fledgling democracy.
