Lee was born in Seoul, Korea and earned a bachelor’s degree in sociology at Yonsei University. In 1994, he joined The Munhwa Daily as a police reporter, later working for four years in the local news section. He later covered politics, the National Assembly and the presidential election along with the historical South and North Korean summit meeting. He earned awards for his coverage of the 1997 food crisis in North Korea, and was the supervisor of The Munhwa Daily Labor Union. In 2002, he was appointed head of the local news section of the social affairs desk, leading a team of 15 reporters on major breaking news. Since 2005, he has covered the stock exchange market, having covered banking, securities, insurance and financial supervisory bodies previously. He was selected to receive two Scoop Awards from Munhwa Daily in 2004 and 1997 and twice was chosen “Reporter of the Month” by the Journalists Association of Korea.
