Yang was born in Dongming in Shandong Province, China and earned a bachelor’s degree in journalism at Wuhan University. She got her start in journalism as a reporter at the China News Agency in 1995, later working as a cultural reporter, a political reporter, and Executive President of the News Department at the agency. She worked for one year as director of the reporter department at China News Week. In 2001, she joined Southern Weekend, a newspaper in the southern city of Guangzhou with a circulation of 1.5 million, and often cited for its independence. At Southern Weekend, she has been a reporter in the Beijing bureau, director of the features department and is currently director of the news department. In that position, she is responsible for a team of 40 reporters and editors and the front page. As an editor, she received two awards for her work in 2006: a first place award for China Environmental Reports and a second place award in the Guangdong News Prize in 2006. She also was awarded First Prize for Best Cultural Reports of the Year in 1999 for her reporting.
