Challenging police narratives, questioning how we cover racial issues and the justice system, encouraging a more nuanced view of our culture beyond stereotypes — Black Twitter has prompted journalists to change the face of news coverage. How can we take these lessons to Latino, Muslim and other underreported communities and learn to better engage, report and respond to the needs of people we cover?
Tracie Powell, a 2015 JSK Fellow and founder of All Digitocracy, initiated and co-moderated this panel discussion of race coverage in the age of social media at the 2015 Online News Association Conference. She was joined by Tanzila Ahmed, co-host of the #GoodMuslimBadMuslim podcast; Meredith Clark, assistant professor at the University of North Texas Mayborn School of Journalism; and Sharis Delgadillo, co-host of Latino Rebels Radio. Dexter Thomas Jr., a reporter at the Los Angeles Times, was the other moderator.
