Former Knight Fellow named president of Unity

Tom Arviso Jr., longtime head of the Native American Journalists Association, is the newly elected president of UNITY: Journalists, Inc. The organizaiton is a coalition of the the Asian American Journalists Association, the National Association of Hispanic Journalists, the Native American Journalists Association and the National Lesbian and Gay Journalists Association.

Arviso, a 2001 Knight Fellow, is executive editor and publisher of the Navajo Times in Window Rock, Arizona. The paper, now a daily and the first to be owned and published by a Native American Indian Nation, was created by the Navajo Tribal Council in 1959. 

Arviso, along with James Mallory, retired vice president of news of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, received the 11th annual Robert G. McGruder Award for Diversity Leadership, awarded by the Associated Press Media Editors.

Arviso will begin his two-year term on Jan. 1, 2013. He and the rest of the UNITY Executive Committee were voted into office on Oct. 6.
