This year’s fellows connected with the Bay Area journalism community at the 2017 JSK festival of news innovation.

JSK Director Dawn Garcia has announced the appointment of three new members of the program’s Board of Visitors

Eighteen journalists and journalism innovators have won John S. Knight Journalism Fellowships at Stanford University for the 2017-18 academic year.

More than $70,000 will be distributed among six innovative journalism experiments being launched by JSK alumni. The projects tackle audience engagement, watchdog journalism, media credibility and other current challenges faced by newsrooms.

Garcia recently discussed her vision for the program’s future with Jay Hamilton, director of Stanford’s Journalism Program and chair of the search committee.

Our mobile users want speed and depth at the same time. We focused the whole relaunch on that need. We had to rethink our reporting style, create new storytelling formats and change our design.

On a more positive note, I was surprised by the sheer number of people who wanted to help. This was key to keeping the idea alive.
