Barry was born in Pittsfield, Massachusetts, grew up in Pennsylvania and attended Pennsylvania State University, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in English. She began her journalism career as a reporter at the Pocono Record, and has worked at the Associated Press since 1987. She has been a reporter in Denver, Fresno and San Francisco for the Associated Press, later moving to the international desk in New York. In 1996, she moved to Germany, where she worked as a Berlin correspondent and most recently as Germany news editor. She has reported in other parts of the world, including stints in Bosnia, Kosovo, Macedonia, Albania and Afghanistan, mostly covering the aftermath of bitter conflicts. She has also covered European figure skating as a respite from war coverage.
