Katherine Jacobsen

Katherine Jacobsen is the U.S., Canada, and Caribbean program coordinator at the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ), where she directs efforts to address emerging threats to journalists across the region. She is the author of two CPJ special reports on U.S. media freedom — "Alarm Bells: Trump’s First 100 Days Ramp Up Fear for the Press, Democracy" and "On Edge: What the U.S. Election Could Mean for Journalists and Global Press Freedom."

Jacobsen has traveled extensively across the United States, working with newsroom leaders and reporters to respond to safety concerns and press freedom challenges. Her expertise on media freedom and First Amendment issues has been cited by outlets including the Associated Press, The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Guardian and others. Before joining CPJ, Jacobsen reported from the Moscow bureau of the Associated Press and freelanced in Ukraine, where she covered the 2014 Maidan protests, the annexation of Crimea and the separatist takeover of Donetsk. Her reporting from Ukraine has appeared in Businessweek, Al Jazeera, Foreign Policy and other publications.
