Shiu-tung (Patrick) Lam

Lyle and Corrine Nelson International Fellow, Class of 2026

Patrick Lam Shiu-tung is the former acting chief editor of Stand News, a prominent independent news outlet in Hong Kong that was forcibly shut down in December 2021 following a police raid involving 200 officers, the freezing of company assets and the arrest of its directors and senior editors, including Lam. As a founding member, he led the newsroom’s investigative and data journalism work. His team produced a series of reports that received major awards, including the Human Rights Press Award, the Chinese University Journalism Award and the Society of Publishers in Asia (SOPA) Award. Stand News was also the only Hong Kong media organization to collaborate with the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ) on the Pandora Papers, and it was nominated for the 2021 Reporters Without Borders Press Freedom Prize for Independence.  After a prolonged legal battle, Lam was convicted ini 2024 of sedition for his work at Stand news under a colonial-era law in Hong Kong and sentenced to 10 months in prison. He is currently working as a freelance editor, supporting independent journalism initiatives while continuing to appeal his conviction.
