Veengas

JSK Journalism Fellow, Class of 2026

Veengas is the founder and editor of The Rise News and a seasoned journalist with over 15 years of experience. She goes by her first name, Veengas. In 2019, she launched The Rise News, an independent, nonprofit digital news organization publishing in Sindhi and English languages. It is the first nonprofit news organization in the Sindh province of Pakistan, where the concept of nonprofit media remains unfamiliar. Through her work building The Rise News, Veengas aims to promote independent journalism focused on local reporting and marginalized communities. She previously worked for Daily Ibrat, a Sindhi-language newspaper. Her work appears frequently in The Wire, a leading independent news website in India, and she’s contributed to several international news organizations, including NPR. Veengas was a 2017 Alfred Friendly Press Partners Fellow in the United States.  She is the author of  “Pakistan’s Troubled Minorities,’’ a book based on her extensive reporting on issues facing underrepresented groups.
