Kirk Caraway

Kirk Caraway ('13)

Founder, owner and publisher, Carson Now, Carson City, Nevada

Project: Megafone, a tool to help local businesses communicate across the web, social media, email and online advertising in local news websites.

Kirk Caraway began his career in newspapers at the age of 9 – not as a paperboy, but processing film for the phototypesetter at his parents’ Kansas weekly, The Lansing Leader. Fast forward to 2009, and Caraway has started his own newspaper – online. After graduating in 1990 with a bachelor’s degree in political science and journalism from Kansas State University, Caraway worked at newspapers in Wyoming, California and Nevada. By the age of 31, he was managing editor of the twice-weekly North Lake Tahoe Bonanza, where his publisher suggested he learn something about this thing called the Internet. He spent a winter learning HTML then built one of the first weekly newspaper websites. He went on to launch websites for the other five newspapers owned by the Sierra NevadaMedia Group, and became its first employee dedicated full time to online publishing. In 2009, he launched CarsonNow, and in 2011, SouthTahoeNow.com, the next step in his planned NowTown Network.
